Library sharing allows a user to share their full library with colleagues in real-time. You will, however, be able to use the Shared Library option to share your library with your colleague across different EndNote versions. Please install the latest version of EndNote to open a library created in EndNote X9.3.1 or above. The new library is also not backward compatible with the older versions of EndNote.
Any libraries created by older versions of EndNote will need to be converted before they can be accessed in the new version. As a result, libraries created in EndNote X9.3.1 can only be opened by EN X9.3.1 and above. The older versions of EndNote do not recognize the new library structure.
Please note that the libraries created using EndNote X9.3.1 or above are not accessible in older versions of EndNote as their library structures are different. You are not able to view the references in the library you received very likely because you and your colleague are using two different versions of EndNote.
